Francis J. Giantomasi Elected Vice Chair of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center's Board of Trustees

Chiesa Shahinian & Giantomasi PC (“CSG”) today announced that named member of the firm Francis J. Giantomasi was recently elected to serve as vice chair of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s (“NBIMC”) board of trustees. Giantomasi is widely recognized as one of New Jersey’s top real estate and redevelopment attorneys and as a prominent leader in Newark’s business community.

Over the course of three decades practicing law, Giantomasi has become a sought-after authority in planning, zoning and development law, including tax abatement law for the City of Newark and other urban areas. Serving as chief development counsel, Giantomasi has played an influential role in many of the Newark area’s most significant recent development and redevelopment projects, including the new 20-story Prudential Tower, Panasonic’s North American headquarters, the Courtyard by Marriott, the $35-million Market Street redevelopment and the development of the new 11-acre, mixed-use Springfield Avenue Marketplace.

Giantomasi has also worked closely with several county government bodies, serving as Essex County counsel, counsel to the Essex County Board of Freeholders and special counsel to the Essex County Utilities Authority. Prior to his election as vice chair of NBIMC’s board of trustees, Giantomasi served on the board as a member. He currently sits on the board of directors of the Newark Regional Business Partnership and as trustee for the Essex County Bar Association.

In addition to Giantomasi’s election to vice chair, the medical center named the following individuals to its board of trustees: Joseph Taylor, president and chief executive officer, Matrix Development Group; Nancy Cantor, chancellor, Rutgers University-Newark; Vaughn Crowe, senior program director, MJC Amelior Foundation; and Wayne Nash, senior vice president, Audible, Inc.

“Newark is undergoing an extraordinary transformation that is the result of a deep commitment among government and business leaders to ensure a vibrant future for one of America’s great cities,” Giantomasi said. “A revitalization of this scale requires a world-class medical center, and I look forward to working with NBIMC and its dynamic board of trustees to help ensure the hospital’s continued excellence.”

With his wealth of local expertise in land use and economic development, as well as his expansive network that includes local officials and business leaders, Giantomasi is uniquely positioned to help guide NBIMC. The hospital is distinguishing itself amidst a radically changing healthcare landscape as the central provider of accessible and sophisticated healthcare services that Newark and its residents need.

“Healthcare will continue to play a pivotal role in Newark’s progress,” said John A. Brennan, MD, MPH, president and chief executive officer of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey. “By becoming vice chairman of the Board at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Frank’s long history with Newark businesses will help us to expand our commitment to the health and wellness of the Greater Newark community.”

Part of Barnabas Health, New Jersey’s largest integrated healthcare delivery system, NBIMC treats more than two million patients per year and employs more than 21,000 individuals, including more than 6,000 doctors, residents and interns. Its Heart Center is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s 100 best; its new Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey Breast Health Center offers the latest in state-of-the-art technology and multidisciplinary care; and its Children’s Hospital of Newark provides specialized care to treat a wide variety of pediatric illnesses and injuries.

“Newark Beth is an integral part of Newark’s business landscape,” said to Marc E. Berson, chairman of the board, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey. “Frank joining us as vice chairman of the board of trustees brings to the table a person of great integrity and history with the city of Newark and the County of Essex. In addition he is someone whose commitment to the people of Newark is paramount in his personal and professional life.”

Along with his deep knowledge of real estate and economic development experience, Giantomasi will also be able to draw upon the knowledge of CSG’s healthcare team. Deeply engaged with many of the region’s most important healthcare issues, the practice group constitutes a valuable resource.

“Frank has CSG’s strong backing for his work with NBIMC,” said Ross Pearlson, co-managing director of the firm and one of the leaders of its healthcare practice. “Due to the work we do at the forefront of healthcare law, he’ll be able to bring an extensive knowledge of the industry to complement his understanding of economic development in Newark.”
